Volunteering

The benefits of volunteering for a charity are numerous! Volunteers are the life force of any charity and help them to run efficiently while keeping costs low – this means that we can channel our funds into improving our services for people with learning disabilities.

Volunteering doesn’t just benefit US, it also benefits YOU! Here are just a few of the benefits that volunteering can bring to your life:

  • Opportunity to meet people and make friends
  • Develop and practice new or existing skills
  • Adds experience to CVs and university applications
  • Motivation and a sense of achievement
  • Being a part of your local community
  • Increase your confidence and self esteem
  • HAVE FUN!!

Whether you have lots of time to spare or just a couple of hours here and there, being a fundraising and events volunteer for Independent Options is an incredibly rewarding experience.

What will my role involve?

As a fundraising and events volunteer there are lots of different activities you can get involved with:

  • In house events
  • Supermarket collections
  • Supermarket bag packs
  • Stalls (markets, car boot sales, etc.)
  • Promotion
  • Collection box distribution

Once you have registered as a volunteer and completed the relevant checks, we will add your details to our fundraising and events volunteer database. When opportunities arise for volunteers, we will contact you either by email or by phone to ask if you would like to take part! If you are able to help with that particular opportunity, then just let us know your availability.

We also offer the opportunity for volunteers to come in on a more regular basis to help the Fundraising and Marketing team. For more information about opportunities like this, contact the Fundraising and Marketing Manager directly.

What do I do next?

If you would like to go ahead and register as a fundraising and events volunteer with Independent Options, then you will need to request an application form from the Fundraising Office: fundraising@independentoptions.org.uk / 0161 456 6502

Once we have received your completed application form, a member of our HR team will then be in contact with you to complete a DBS (formerly CRB) check.

Kevin's Story

Kevin uses Independent Options’ Short Breaks service. His Mum, Jude, tells of how the experience has helped her family.

“Having a disabled child totally changes the dynamics of family life. With all the meetings, hospital appointments and such it can be draining on everyone. When Kevin is at Hallfield guest house I am safe in the knowledge that he is with staff who genuinely care. I also know that he always has a great time and he can do what he chooses to do safely – and without his Mum there too! To have this service is so valuable as it gives me as a parent that time to do things I can’t when Kevin is at home, and I don’t feel guilty leaving him because I know that he really enjoys his time there with the staff and other guests.

“I adore my son and would not change him or his disability as then that would not be Kevin, but to have these respite breaks is wonderful for both of us as it means that I can recharge my batteries too. A service like the one offered through Independent Options is genuinely priceless.”
